Changes to International Visas
The following changes have been introduced from 6th April for student visas.
Tier 4: Increase in maintenance required
On 6th April 2012, the amount of maintenance required by students applying for a Tier 4 visa increased from £600 per month to £800 per month (if studying in outside London).
Tier 1 Post-Study Work scheme now closed
The Tier 1: Post-Study Work (PSW) scheme closed to all new applications from 6th April 2012.
Tier 4: Changes to application from 6th April
A new version of the Tier 4 (General) student visa application form was introduced on 6th April 2012, replacing application form version 07/11.
From this date, Version 04/12 of the form should be used for new applications.
Tier 4: Five year cap on study at degree level or above
For those making Tier 4 applications from 6th April 2012 a grant of a visa should not result in the student spending more than five years studying at degree level or above in the UK.
This means that students can have a student visa for a maximum of five years to complete their Bachelors and Masters degrees in the UK. This may affect students who have had to repeat periods of study in the UK.
If you have been in the UK for four years or more and wish to continue your studies you should get visa advice as soon as possible.
________________________________________
Tier 4 visa extensions: Apply early
If you need to extend your Student Visa to complete your current course, you need to start preparing early. It is advisable to start preparing your application at least 3-4 months before your current visa expires so that you give yourself enough time.
Where possible, you should request your CAS at least 3-4 months before your current visa expires.

An Evening With Tony Benn

We are pleased to invite you to a very special event as part of our public lecture series ‘An evening with Tony Benn’ on Wednesday 20 June 2012 – 7.30pm.
Expect an evening of frank responses and political anecdotes when veteran Labour politician Tony Benn will be talking about his life in politics and what he thinks about the changes in the Labour Party.
It’s more than a decade since Tony Benn - the longest serving MP in the history of the Labour party - retired from the House of Commons and famously announced that, after 50 years in Parliament, he was planning “to spend more time on politics.”
In recent years Benn has condemned the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and has published eight volumes of diaries as well as collections of speeches and writings.
Forthright, outspoken and tireless in his campaigns Benn has been as good as his word.
Tony Benn comments “I get quite excited about bringing political debate back to the people through these evening events, which is probably not a good thing for a man of my age!”
Don’t miss this wonderful opportunity to hear Tony reminisce and give his views on politics today. There will also be time for audience questions and answers.
Date: Wednesday 20 June 2012
Time: 7.30-9.15pm
Venue: The Great Hall, University of Bradford

GLEE (Green Library Environment & Education)

GLEE (Green Library Environment & Education) is our latest Student Experience enhancement project for 2012 that will radically improve the learning environment on levels 1 & 2 of the city campus library. The £1.5 million project is jointly funded by HEFCE (Higher Education Funding Council for England) and the University and will seek to enhance not only the learning environment itself but also our users understanding of the green impact of building design and function and importantly what green impact the individual user of the space can make.
We will radically improve our :
Natural light, views and open space
Control of ventilation and heating
Reduce universities carbon footprint
Feedback to you on our environment performance
The ways in which users can study and access technology
The project has a tight schedule, commencing April/May 2012. There will be an inevitable period of disturbance for users and staff, who will be working very hard to ensure that we maintain as excellent a service as ever for you throughout the project. In doing so we will:
We will continue to deliver our full range of services throughout the project
As of April key high demand stock that you can access will be relocated in different areas of the library building – this will be clearly signposted
Some less used stock will be located elsewhere and we will operate an ordering service for you where we will collect items for you to pick up
We will identify new and existing alternative study spaces in and external to the library itself
We will extend group study booking hours on level 01
As a trial for the project duration, we will remove Facebook access from certain PCs and PC quiet cluster spaces in the library
We will extend the limit of books you can borrow over the summer vacation period
We will be updating project plans on a regular basis and ensuring that all staff and students are kept informed via our project web pages, bulletin boards in the library and via Staff/Student Liaison Committees and the Union website.
Want to Earn a Quick Buck? UBU Advice Urges Caution!
With university fees and living costs rocketing, many students are looking for ways to earn a bit of extra cash, or to somehow reduce their expenses.
We highly encourage this of course, but ask that you are careful about how you go about this.
There have been a number of recent incidences of fraud where students are approached by ‘intermediaries’ who offer to pay tuition fees and other costs to their universities at a discounted rate, with the student in turn paying the intermediary.
However, the credit cards used by the intermediaries to pay the university are stolen, leaving the student unknowingly linked to criminal activity and still liable for costs.
Another recent fraud has involved ‘market research’ companies emailing students promising cash for filling in surveys. While there are a few legitimate companies who pay for surveys, most are scams and could lose you a lot of money.
Be very wary of any company that contacts you promising to make you money or save you money. If a company is genuine, it will most likely not be sending emails to you advertising its services.
If you are in doubt please check it out with the Advice Centre first, or do your own very thorough research. Never give out any personal details, especially bank details, and never make any payments unless you are certain that it is a genuine offer.
If you do find yourself the victim of any kind of scam, there may be something you can do. Don’t hesitate to contact the advice centre on 01274 233300 or at ubu-advice@bradford.ac.uk for help and advice

Student awareness campaign: lymphatic cancer
Hi there,
I’m the student awareness campaign coordinator for the Lymphoma Association and I was hoping that you would be able to help us raise awareness of lymphoma with your students. The reason we are targeting students with our awareness campaign is that lymphoma is the most common cancer in the under 30s and a large proportion of students fall into that age group.
Our ‘PITS’ campaign, which is backed by the Department of Health aims to raise awareness of lymphoma amongst university students using ‘PITS’, an acronym derived from four of the common symptoms of lymphoma:
Persistent lumps (usually in your neck, arm pits or groin), Itching, Tiredness and Sweating (particularly at night).
Lymphoma is cancer of the lymphatic system which is part of the immune system. One of the challenges in detecting and diagnosing it is that the symptoms (above) can often be put down to the effects of a typical busy student’s lifestyle. We really want students to know about the warning signs, regularly check their bodies and not hesitate to visit their GP if they are concerned about any changes.
If you would like any further information on the campaign or would like to be posted some posters, please reply email to d.owen@lymphomas.org.uk or call me on 01296 619418.I look forward to hearing from you.
