Insurance

Contents Insurance

One of the first things you should make sure you organise on your arrival in Bradford is contents insurance. Unless your parents agree to extend their own insurance to cover your possessions in your new home, or you are living in halls or a flat where insurance is included in your rent (double check if in doubt), you will need to purchase your own policy. Without this, none of your possessions will be covered in the event of burglary, a fire or similar. There are many different policies out there offering various levels and types of cover. Read each one carefully to see what is and isn’t covered. Some things are more important to some people than others. Make sure you have what you need in your policy, even if it means paying a few pounds more. Be aware that the type of lock you have on your bedroom door may affect what level of cover you can get, and if the first company you try won’t cover you, try another.

Car Insurance

Please follow the link for a very useful and comprehensive guide to buying car insurance and details on how to search for the best deal for you http://www.zencarinsurance.co.uk/car_insurance_guide_for_bradford_university_students.htm

Mobile Phone Insurance

Phone companies are often quick to insist you must insure your mobile phone. However, increasingly, people are finding that it is of little use. Often you will find out you are still not covered, or have to pay a hefty additional charge even if you are covered. Unless you have a very expensive phone and you are prone to losing things, think twice before you buy. See http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/insurance/cheap-mobile-phone-insurance for the ins and outs of buying phone insurance.

Travel Insurance

If you’re planning a trip out of the country, you should make sure you are covered in case something goes wrong abroad. However, policies are very varying in content and while some cover everything from repatriation to lost luggage, others only cover the bare minimum. Decide what you want or need and go from there. If you take more than 1 trip abroad per year it might be worth you getting an annual policy. Be wary of any polices offered by travel agents, especially as part of a package deal; they’re rarely good value and only worth it if you don’t mind paying excessively for the ease of someone else organising it for you.

Finding Insurance

Comparison websites such http://www.comparethemarket.com/?gclid=CM-LpZaHzp0CFZQA4wodJ306sQ and http://www.confused.com/ take a lot of the legwork out of finding the right policy for you. It’s always good, however, to do your own detective work and check out the credentials of the provider which looks best for you. Some companies are unfortunately not as efficient and reliable as others. If in doubt, go for a well-known name. It may not necessarily be the cheapest, but Endsleigh is a favourite among many students as it offers insurance specifically tailored towards them. See http://www.endsleigh.co.uk/student-possessions.html for more details.
