► Mitigating Circumstances

Advice on Mitigating Circumstances

NOTE: If you have any urgent worries you should ring your School IMMEDIATELY to find out what the best course of action is:

Recent Policy change

Message from the Dean of Students:

“The university recently implemented a change to the deadline for mitigating circumstances and introduced a charge for non-completion of assessed work.

You will have received an official notification about this which was sent to your university email address on the 30 November 2009. In addition the Student Union have published a number of articles about this in the 4th edition of the Bradford Student newspaper.

Many of you may well be wondering “What does this mean for me?”. Essentially the answer to that question for most of you will be not a lot assuming you don’t leave things to the last minute to complete your assessments! As long as you continue to hand in your work by the set deadlines and sit your assessed exams/labs then the change won’t affect you at all. It will only affect you if you are unable to meet your deadlines or attend your assessments and you have not gained agreement in advance to do so. For this reason we cannot stress enough the importance of starting work on your assessments as soon as you can and not leaving it to the last minute.

The ‘What Happens If...?' document (Click here to view) gives some examples of where you might find that you have missed a deadline or exam. The university has also received a number of questions and queries about what this change means for you based on your personal and individual circumstances and why it has been done. The FAQ at the bottom of this message will hopefully answer some of those questions. If you are at all worried about the change please contact your personal tutor in the first instance and talk to them about it. And please do this sooner rather than later so that we can help as much as we can. There is a limit to what we can do with only a couple of hours notice!

If you have any questions about this PLEASE contact your personal tutor or the Dean of your School in the first instance.”

Extreme Weather Conditions

Message from the Director of Learning and Teaching:

Students are expected to make every effort to get to their examinations over the next two weeks. If bad weather is predicted you should try to make arrangements to be in Bradford before the weather hits, and must allow plenty of time to reach the examination room. You should explore alternative methods of transport such as bus, train or foot if you normally come in by car.

The University does recognise though that the exceptionally bad weather may make it impossible for students to attend some exams. The exceptional weather is an extenuating circumstance that would be considered good cause for failure to attend an exam, but only if appropriate evidence is provided.

Acceptable evidence could include recommendations from the police that travel is not advised in your area, evidence that train or bus services are cancelled or school or social services closures mean you are left without suitable care for dependants. The evidence should demonstrate how the circumstances affected you. In the event of sudden deterioration of the weather you should focus your efforts on getting to the exam rather than informing your department you may be delayed.

If you have any queries over this contact your course tutor or course administrator. Further information will be made available on the examinations web site:

You should check this regularly for updates.”
