RamAid is RamAir's mission to raise £40,000 for its new studios.
History
RamAir began broadcasting at 3pm on Wednesday 1st October 1980, originally located on the top floor of the Communal Building before moving to its permanent position in the Students’ Union building.
Coming from a proposal by Dave Wells of the Bradford radio society, RUBADUB (Radio University Bradford Audio Department, University of Bradford) in the mid 1970s, RamAir has gone on to be the longest continuously running student radio station in the UK, due to celebrate its 30th anniversary in Autumn 2010.
Winning multiple awards over its history and the first student radio station in the UK to secure an RSL for FM broadcast in 1990 and the first student radio station to broadcast via the Wii and PS3 in 2007, RamAir has always been an important contributor to Bradford University live from freshers’ fayre and the pub crawl through to Hustings and the end of year party.
Why £40,000?
In Summer 2009 the Communal Building was closed for £7million worth of refurbishments and the occupants of the building moved into the temporary Student Centre in a modernised block of Kirkstone Halls.
RamAir re-positioned itself in three of the rooms, moving over the equipment to continue broadcasting. However, with most of the equipment touching on twenty-years plus, it’s only a matter of time before it gives up the ghost.
The two studios will not only allow a new generation of students to discover student radio and become the next big name on the radio but will allow other students to boost their degree using the state-of-the-art facilities.
What does RamAir mean for students?
RamAir has been a constant in the Students’ Union for almost thirty years and has seen students go on to big jobs in local and national radio.
It has also been a backbone to University life through covering of Students’ Union and University events, contributing DJs to night-time events and allowing students to discover new skills and talents through areas that very rarely covered in school and college educations.
