Academic Affairs Officer |
 |
Matt Wysocki
I am a reliable and strong-minded person who puts values above political correctness. At the same time, I recognise different points of view and different priorities that people have. I am running for Academic Affairs Officer because I want to be your voice and eyes in the bureaucratic university structures. Education is not only the best preparation for life, but education is life itself.
The Academic Affairs Officer should do everything possible to make your life at the University a positive and effective experience. My main objectives are:
To monitor university policies to ensure that they reflect your interests and needs
To promote diverse forms of assessment that would benefit learning
To ensure quality feedback that would assist in self development – receiving only a mark with unclear hand written comments is not helpful
To lobby for a fair fee structure - students should not be treated as “easy money makers”
To make the Union more visible through specific campaigns and on day-to-day university life issues
To develop the course representative system so it becomes a more effective tool for improvements
And, most of all, to communicate with you and encourage your involvement in issues that will affect you.
I know how to listen and I believe I can make a difference. I am a man of ideas and I will ensure that my time spent representing you will not be wasted!

Sophia Coles-Riley
I have worked passionately for Bradford students as a councillor, NUS delegate, part-time officer and your Ethics, Environment & Welfare Officer. I am asking you to re-elect me so that I can build upon work done so far.
This year I helped make the university realise that student safety is vital and UBU successfully lobbied for a Student Safety officer. I will keep pushing for a safe route across campus, better street lighting and a ‘safety at night’ demonstration.
I have been lobbying the university to provide top class prayer rooms. I will campaign against Islamophobic policies and keep up the fight against fascism.
I have convinced the university to improve the Free City Bus and will campaign for better public transport and Management School buses.
I will defend student workers, encourage membership of trade unions, investigate local employers and promote student workers rights, especially minimum wage and statutory breaks.
Surprising numbers of students have dependants or informally support friends. I will campaign for the introduction of a student parents’ policy and improved mitigating circumstances for carers.
Despite Ecoversity’s dithering, I have convinced the university to reinvestigate their ethical investment and procurement policy. I want to follow this through, organising events like the Fairtrade Chocolate Party.
I want to continue to support student activism. This year we have taken part in action against student debt, won an environmental award, occupied the university boardroom in solidarity with Gaza, demonstrated for civil liberties and co-organised a national demonstration for free education.

I’ve been working very closely with both the Students Union and Ecoversity office for over a year running the second hand shop and working as a Student Ambassador, which has involved not only engaging students in environmentally conscious activities but also examining and discussing what they need to see happen the most at this University to help improve it for the better wellbeing of each and every individual. If elected I intend to:
• Vastly improve difficult student life by trying to cater to important individual needs and issues such as: food, safety, harassment, culture, housing, religion and gender issues. I will endeavour to provide students with appropriate, confidential and effective action and advice to aid in the resolution process.
• Construct a stronger relationship with the Ecoversity initiative to further the environmental cause along with sustainable development by working hard to continuously educate students through positive engagement and more appealing activities such as fundraisers, gigs etc.
• Not only concentrate on environmental welfare but also physical, emotional and mental welfare too. I intend to enhance and provide the maximum help possible for students suffering due to issues ranging from abuse and bereavement to anxiety and depression.
• Build stronger relationships with other Union groups such as the Women’s Forum, ISOC, MSGI and International Students in order to develop a better support system.
• Help and support students get the absolute best they can out of this establishment, be it through academia or social action, because they deserve nothing less.

About me
I am a third year media Technology and Production. I have worked as
a technician for “Flirt” (FND); this means that I know what is involved in the running of the Union events and know what needs to be improved. I also have been the rowing clubs president for the last two years. I am on the union council as the AA representative, which means that I have been looking after all the sports clubs interests and trying to change policies so that it makes it easier for them to work within the union and to get their point of view across.
Why do I want the position?
The reason why I want this position is so that I can give something back to the union which gave me support and encouragement throughout my time as an undergraduate of the university. Throughout my time at university I have been very active in the sports clubs and I now want to use my degree to help out the union and its students in return.
What I would like to do if I get in:
• Launch a student television station.
• Put on more live events.
• Increase the number of films being shown in the cinema and improve their advertisement.
• Help the sports and societies to increase their members and achieve an easy way for them to advertise themselves.

With University places have never been more competitive. The recent financial downturn has led to more people than ever choosing to learn new skills and re-train - leading to a more diverse range of students, more mature students, international students and more local students.
I am standing for Media and Ents Officer because I believe that we need to change the way we do things. UBU has an important role in making university the best time of your life - it can only do this if it is a strong, active, campaigning union and understands what students want and needs.
As your officer, I will ensure students see the Union as a place that is there for them. I have been active as your Black Students’ Officer both on campus and with NUS - I will make sure we have a strong national voice on issues from student debt to racism and Islamophobia.
I will work to increase student involvement in the student paper, so there views and opinions on safety, health, quality of student feedback, the library, and much more can be used to make sure the university knows what students think. As Entertainment moves to the city centre, I will make sure safety; quality and a good price (!) are prioritised.
I will celebrate the multicultural nature of our campus by organising Fashion Shows, more Comedy nights, International Food fairs, women-only and non-alcoholic events.

Student Activities Officer |
 |
Joshua Esin
Running a club or a society can be challenging. Budgets need to be made and targets need to be achieved, but it can also be immensely rewarding. My experience from running a student society means I understand the needs of society and club Presidents and members.
I will fight hard to make sure the new sport centre has the facilities that reflect your needs, are accessible and widen participation. I will build on successes in BUSA and work to increase membership to the AA. I will organise training for club executives so they understand how the union can support them and push for a wider range of activities so you can compete competitively.
For many of us, involvement in societies is often the highlight of being at university. My involvement with the ACS highlighted the needs for clubs and societies to have equal funding. I will lead a review to find a model that ensure societies that play an invaluable role in our members lives are given the financial support they need.
My vast experience of organising a diverse range of events from Charity game nights, football tournaments to co-ordinating initiatives across Yorkshire for Black History Month means that I ensure such events run smoothly. I will work to double student involvement in RAG activities and UCAN.
The Union must think how we involve local students in our activities. I will make sure there are more non-alcoholic and women-only events. I will put your views into action, quickly and effectively.

Adam Horsfall
Adam Horsfall for Student Activities Officer
Hi, my name is Adam, I’m currently in my third year of Clinical Sciences and I’m standing for the post of Student Activities Officer. Over the past three years I have been involved as a sports coach, president for two different societies, and a keen participant in volunteering, so I can empathise with all aspects of the job! Having first-hand experience in all three areas means best results for everyone! My three main focuses are:
SPORTS FOR ALL
If elected I will:
• Improve facilities for recreational sports by expanding the Inter-Departmental Sports League and promoting health and fitness through sports, as well as emphasising all the non-competitive sports available.
• Continue to improve our competitive sports through coaching and not let our great standards fall!
MAKE YOURSELF HEARD
If elected I will:
• Empower the students’ voice and ensure the new sports centre is student centred, not focused on the public!
• Encourage societies to have a bigger role and presence on campus.
• Get your opinions heard on the rebuild of the Communal Building and ensure societies are more important than ever!
BIGGER PARTICIPATION
If elected I will:
• Push volunteering to be more student led, with increased publicity and recognition for hard work done.
• Lobby the union to keep Wednesday afternoons as lecture-free as possible, with no compulsory attendances so that students can take part in any sports, societies or volunteering they wish to.

During my time at Bradford I have received a great deal of support from the Student Activities Officer in my capacity as club executive officer and when setting up a society last year.
Having run a club and managed budgets successfully I will bring first hand expertise to supporting club and society officers through the challenges they face. From the volunteering perspective I again bring practical experience, having raised money for Cancer Research and volunteered in Welcome Weeks and Open Days, and completed the Millennium Volunteers scheme and Duke of Edinburgh awards.
Policies I will pursue if elected include:
Volunteering
• Focus on helping groups to improve support for volunteering activities.
• Increase awareness of the RAG scheme by a concerted awareness campaign.
Societies
• Help to grow societies by working closely with their members to make the most of their budgets.
• Support the start-up of new Societies and canvass opinion on gaps in the range offered, supporting new start-ups.
Sports
• Continue to drive ‘Team Bradford’, which has been Katie’s focus and into which she has put so much effort, to provide coaching excellence for every club.
• Evaluate sports facilities, working to upgrade them to improve the sporting experience for club members and increase Bradford’s sporting success.
Bradford has been really good to me over the last three years, now I want to put a bit back – I hope you will support me to realize this manifesto whilst ensuring that your views are represented at all times.

Having taken a leading role in my team and being an AA member for the past two years, I am interested in continuing and building on the work that has already been done to improve the experience of sports teams, societies and UCAN. As Student Activities Officer for the next academic year I propose to undertake various changes in hope of bettering our services for students, including:
• Ensuring the proposed improvements at Woodhall, such as drainage and floodlights, are put through allowing matches every week as well as grass training.
• Fundraising through various means, including an inter-sports teams tournament, question of sport and societies night, all aimed at increasing the budget and overall unity of the AA and societies.
• Integrate societies and ensure that, in light of the refurbishment of the Communal Building next year, there are adequate facilities for meetings.
• Considering the position’s wide-scope, push for a separate societies’ co-ordinator who would have better knowledge to serve societies’ needs.
• Resolve the problem of inconvenient times in the new sports hall next year for Wednesday games.
• Take a more hands-on approach, visiting teams and societies regularly to help things run smoothly and efficiently, as well as using these visits to keep up-to-date on any problems that may arise and listen to suggestions throughout the year.
• Ensure that students’ interests are adequately represented in any University policies related to activities, facilities etc.
• Promote Team Bradford and try and foster a more unified community.

Union Secretary-Treasurer |

|
Khaled Al Mudallal
I’m standing for a strong and active Union that represents, defends and supports its students. As Union Secretary-Treasurer I will ensure that our Union is an effective voice for all students.
I believe that the UBU can only be financially successful if it respects the fantastic diversity of our student body and empowers all students to participate in the life of our Union.
Our union must be democratic, accountable and represent student interest to the University. I will work to increase student turnout in elections and raise awareness of how they can have their say.
We need initiatives that involve all students in the union, including more non-alcoholic and day-time events. The new proposed Student Union building must be accessible and meet the needs of all our students.
I will make sure that the Union plays an active role in fighting prejudice and discrimination. I will do more to support students during ‘Welcome Week’, so they can turn to the Union if they have any financial or academic issues.
My experience of being trapped in Gaza taught me how crucial it is to explore every opportunity to solve a problem. As the Chair of “Let Palestinians Study” campaign, I have the skills and experience needed to make UBU the inclusive, financially-sound and democratic Union that Bradford students need.

“Your union, your choice”
I am standing for a strong Union. I believe that the role the union plays in supporting students and in representing them is absolutely essential. I intend to make sure that the UBU continues to be a proactive union, one that caters for the needs of all its members and that has a strong voice in its dealings with the University and the NUS. Every student is a member of UBU and I intend to make sure that each and every one of you has a stake and a say in the issues that affect YOU!
I am standing for a vibrant, dynamic and modern Union. In my three years at Bradford, I have witnessed the UBU transform and I am standing to ensure that the positive changes continue to happen. The next year will be one of exciting change and fantastic opportunity with a fabulous new and improved Student’s Union to look forward to! I am standing because I am excited about the possibilities that the UBU presents all of us and I want to make them realities. I want to make YOUR student life BETTER.
What I plan to do?
-
I plan to make UBU more approachable for all students, providing students with more choice over the way that their union is run.
-
I plan to ensure that there is more scrutiny over the way that your money is spent.
-
I plan to ensure that students have control over student services.

Peter Hill
Fellow students, it’s election time again! In a liberal democratic society such as ours there is no right more important than that of voting. It is therefore with great humility that I stand in this election for the post of Union Secretary - Treasurer.
My platform for this election is one of both change and continuity: I plan to continue the excellent work of the current Secretary – Treasurer in reducing costs and balancing the Union’s budget. For change, I bring very different ambitions: If elected, in the coming year I will:
• Not only balance the books but make the union profitable by improving the Union’s Commercial Services, reducing unnecessary costs and ensuring that the services the Union offers are the ones that students really want.
• Campaign to re-instate the office of President of the Union to give the Union the strategic leadership it needs.
• Represent ALL students and make the Union fully inclusive.
• Uphold the Union’s constitution.
• NEVER mince my words or bite my tongue when representing the Union to the University.
• Ensure the UBU gets the best deal possible from the NUS and NUSSL.
As well as my agenda for change, I bring to this challenging role 17 years of experience in local politics, a BA (Hons) in Politics, Philosophy and Economics, and soon an MSc in Public Policy and Programme Management from our great University of Bradford.
Vote Peter Hill #1 for change, experience and the Union we ALL deserve!

Ian Thursfield
Hello everybody. I’m Ian Thursfield, a third and final year law student at our University. My desired position for our union is secretary-treasurer. If I get voted into the union, I will make a tangible difference to your University experience, which is said to be one of the most fantastic, if not the best experiences of your life.
My experience runs through high school, where I was secretary for the student body for two years. Then I was an active member of my 6th form’s committee, including presiding over a budget. Then recently I carry out my role of secretary, and sometimes treasurer, for my sport, here at University. This has been to a very high standard, as I’ve even been nominated for an award to celebrate my achievements.
I will fight for students to be more informed about, and involved, in decisions made by the University. Such as the ongoing master plan and union changes i.e. the courtyard bar.
I will listen to all your views and make your stay at Bradford University as enjoyable and fun as I possibly can, by working vigorously on projects such as welcome week and maximising the money around the union.
There is always a time for hope and change, and in today’s climate that time is now. So I propose to you that voting for me, Ian Thursfield, as your secretary treasurer, enables us to work towards a brighter and more rewarding future for the University of Bradford, but most importantly you.

‘Money does make the world go round after all’
As treasurer I will bring in enable cost effective practices to recover from last year’s deficit. I will develop strategies to ensure success with fresh ideas to the treasurer’s position and be actively involved in co-ordinating meetings with other committees. By talking to other committees I will work on practical recommendations to ensure existing resources are not wasted, utilise opportunities and develop recycling programmes to become efficient.
Being an active student, I am aware of concerning issues surrounding the UB area and I can offer viable solutions to these problems. Money should not be wasted and can it be invested wisely on students and improving the UB area. I will be open to meet people who have any concerns and would be open to suggestions and have meetings regularly with committees to ensure excellent co-ordination.
I will enjoy facing challenges and responsibilities that come with the position and will give my full attention to the students and ensure I tackle issues head on. My primary focus would be to find cost cutting methods in the daily running of the UBU yet ensuring a high quality of service to the students of the university. My skills make me an ideal candidate to represent the students and the union with great admiration in front of the university and external parties. Its time the students deserved better and I will make sure that YOUR voices are heard!
Your friend,

“I only know that people call me a feminist whenever I express sentiments that differentiate me from a doormat or a prostitute.” Rebecca West
I’m a final year social work student with vast experience of working with people from diverse backgrounds including women with traumatic experiences. Currently I’m a Chaperone on the UBU Safety Bus.
Throughout life I have faced discrimination and fought stereotypes for being a woman, in particular a Muslim woman. These experiences have enforced in me the need for a strong women’s liberation movement. It is a gross misconception that women’s liberation has been won.
I am passionate about building a women’s campaign on campus which tackles issues ranging from the objectification of women in the media to domestic abuse and forced marriages. For far too long women have accepted second best, this must change and I believe that women students are central to this challenge.
The judicial system fails women where domestic abuse (in all its guises) and rape is concerned. We struggle to find affordable child care if we choose to study or work while battling with the forces of a capitalist society, which has consistently worked against us. In the work place, including our own University, we find that management is largely male, yet we make up over 50% of the student body!
Bradford needs an active women’s campaign that reflects the needs of a diverse student body and society.

Zeynab Ahmed # 1 NUS delegate:
I will take a stand against apathy, students today are marginalised and need more of a voice. To encourage students to rise up and be passionate about the issues they care about; Palestine, global poverty and the environment or issues which affect us on a daily basis such as tuition fees. If today we have a black president in the USA, tomorrow anything is possible. Lets us stand together, united, to transform student politics and who knows tomorrow the world! I will stand on a platform of honesty and integrity for an open and transparent NUS.

Arwa Almari # 1 NUS delegate:
The students at the University of Bradford have chosen me to be their representative at presvious NUS conferences, where I have been trusted to vote on one of the most controversial issues in the recent history of NUS; the governance review. Bradford has submitted four motions for discussion at this year’s annual conference. These were on issues including free education, having an accessible union, improving higher education in Iraq, and preserving the autonomy of students unions and societies. As a delegate, I will ensure that the motions submitted in your name become NUS policy.
|
 |
Munaza Kulsoom
If elected, I intend to fight for student’s right to education regardless of economic background. The government has already backtracked on its agreements to increase grants and is strongly considering lifting the cap on top-up fees. This will only deter students from low-income households, as lifting the cap is predicted to increase the average student debt to a monumental £25,000. Several motions will be discussed at this year’s NUS conference that will mandate our union to campaign rigorously against lifting the cap, and I will be there to vote for motions that will serve the interests of students of Bradford.

NUS is far more than just about discount schemes it’s the body that represent and evokes the voice of students dealing with student issues. As a delegate I will ensure the voice of Bradford student is louder amongst the crowd.
I will campaign for free education, support active campaigns against student debt and higher fees for home and international student.
Oppose sexism, racism, disablism, homophobia and Islamophobia, which are issues I have been actively campaigning against for Bradford. Moreover, to ensure that NUS is inclusive, democratic and accountable, defend the rights of international student.

NUS national conference is a very big and complicated place and it takes a strong, experienced delegate to get your voice heard. I am that person.
Bradford students have elected me to represent them at NUS conference 9 times now because they know that I’m competent, confident, and passionate and have successfully passed Bradford policy at previous NUS conferences.
I want an NUS that truly represents you. NUS should lead the way on issues like student workers rights, anti-racism/anti-Islamophobia, and civil liberties. NUS must be accessible not discriminatory and fighting for free education not means tested funding.

• Defend Palestinian rights to education and demand an end to the siege of Gaza
• Stand against the differentiation of overseas students, through introduction of biometric ID cards
