As part of the University’s sustainability strategy we require all construction projects on campus to comply with a Sustainability specification which covers all aspects of the design, construction and the use of buildings, a copy of the specification can be seen on the Estates department website. Whilst the Communal Building project was tendered prior to the implementation of this specification most of the standards embedded in the document have been considered and will be implemented within the building. In addition to the University and their consultants the specification also gives the building contractor a number of obligations, two of those conditions are to procure and use in the construction process, materials from sustainable sources and to minimise and recycle demolition materials and waste. The standards require the contractor to…..

Minimising the Use of materials |
All developments must be able to demonstrate the steps taken to reduce the quantity of materials used in the design and construction of the buildings. Site Waste Management Plans must be produced for all projects and shall include reduce/reuse/recycling targets that incorporate best practice. |
|
Recycled Content |
All developments must use the WRAP process for assessing the recycled content of the proposals. A value of 30% recycled content by value is required. |
We are fortunate that on the Communal Building the main contractor BAM Construction have their own established waste management policy and procedure which they are fully operational with and will achieve the University’s requirements. As part of the on going site supervision we monitor the waste and the check the records kept, but we thought that other personnel outside the construction team may be interested in learning how this process is implemented and controlled, BAM have kindly arranged a visit to their waste transfer station for us to hear at first hand how this process takes place. The visit is planned for 1.00pm Wednesday 17th February 2010, it is open to all university students and staff and arrangement have been made for a mini-bus to transfer visitors from campus directly to the LSS’s recycling unit at Cross Gates in Leeds we should be back on campus between 4pm & 5pm. On this visit there will space for 8 persons but if demand exceeds this number then I am sure further visits can be arranged.
