Candidates

Black Students Officer

Abdul Basit Ali

People of ethnic minorities have always been at the sideline of society when their contributions have been integral to its development. They have achieved great successes in all aspects of life and that is why I want to ensure that students from such minorities can gain the full experience of university life without any hindrance. 54% of our student body is made up of students from ethnic minority backgrounds therefore it is essential their voice is heard.  I want to represent this voice; I want to “Unite the minorities to form a majority”

Doyinsola Obileye

One thing that is constant in life is change, with great movement comes great change hence I represent great change. I am Doyinsola Obileye 2nd year student in Human Resource Management. My motivation for this role is based on the belief that it’s an opportunity to influence change and previous experience assisting the previous black students’ officer confirmed this. As an active member of Red Ribbon and ACS societies, I am aware of how to deal with different types of people on a regular basis. My plea is to be given a shot at making a small but significant difference.

My name is Joanne Okonkwo and I am currently a second year clinical sciences student with a background in public speaking, youth regeneration, fundraising, charity work, healthcare and performing arts.

My diverse background is indicative of my hardworking, trustworthy and intuitive nature and has armed me with the skills to fulfil this role as your Black and Ethnic Minority Students Officer. I intend to make the views of the black and ethnic minority students heard and recognised, bringing about a new era of integration and individual personal development.

Thulani Lisa Ngwenya

Hello my name is Thulani Lisa Ngwenya. I am a third year student, studying Biomedical Sciences and I would very much like to become your Mature Students Officer. After having several years out of education and being in a job I didn’t enjoy.. I feel having experienced some of the difficulties mature students face I can accurately represent you and fight to make University of Bradford a more mature student friendly place.

I want mature students to feel that they belong here, that their voice and opinions are heard and expectations met. So vote for me!

Abiola Oluwatoyin Shofoluwe

I am a matured student married with three children. I am studying Business and Management Studies.

I used to be the Vice President of National Sociological/ Anthropological Students Association in Nigeria. Currently, I am the co-ordinator of the Good Women Fellowship of RCCG. I play an active role in the Redeemed Student Christian Fellowship.

Being a student with dependants could be very challenging:  not knowing where to go and the sort of help that is available.

I am hardworking and believe all students should be treated equally. I will bring my organisation skills and can do attitude into this post.

LGBT Officer

Michael McKechnie

I like to keep it simple, so here’s my promises:
   
- to build up a rapport with LGBTQ students, including those who are not in the Bradford LGBTQ – no student should be excluded just because they aren’t in one society
- to provide support and advice confidentially to those who need it – regardless of sexuality or gender identity
- work together with the staff LGBT society to make the university a more friendly place for students and staff with minority sexual and gender identities
- make campaigns highlighting awareness, acceptance and action on relevant issues

Bushra Almari

I am an ideal candidate to be a delegate for the National Union of Students because I will make sure whatever motions you want to be passed are passed and whatever motions you don’t want to pass will not pass. So your rules will become NUS rules. I aim to work towards:

    Raising the issue of free higher education
    Voting against lifting the cap on tuition fees
    Supporting peace and justice globally

Sabiha Iqbal

Student equality needs a key focus on justice. In order for students to be treated fairly, and at the same standard, we need to respect and understand each others’ differences and requirements; whether or not they are identical to our own. My active involvement in several University societies, as well as an Ecoversity Ambassador, community, youth and civil rights activist has given me an insight and wider understanding of the political and social foundations on which we need to build a concept of open minded, yet principled discussions and more importantly – direct action and change in our student welfare.

Ian Martin Thursfield

Hello. I am Ian Thursfield. I am studying Foundation in Engineering, after doing a Law degree here aswell.

I am running for the NUS to promote what you, a student of Bradford Uni, wants on a national scale. Together we can take the issues, no matter how small, to the national delegation. We can promote our issues such as LOWER tuition fees, MORE environmental protection, GREATER discount on goods and a CLEARER union for us all to use.

Arwa Almari

As a person who has won your trust in previous elections to represent you at the local (council) and national (NUS) levels, I aim to continue working for the well-being of the students at Bradford University.
Of the few campaigns I hope to champion this year:
-    A transparent students union...one where access is not restricted to those elected for the purpose of serving you and I;
-    A lecture/practical free hour period (1-2pm) on Fridays for Muslim students to fulfil their congregational prayers

Robert Arkuoko

Most People call me Bobby. Studying Business Economics 2nd year and run the only R&B/Hip-hop show on Ramair. Friendly guy and thanks to travelling and curiosity I am exposed to different types of cultures therefore I am accustomed to diversity.

This is an opportunity to apply my full potential; So far that shows in the little things I do like sponsoring less fortunate kids travelling, teaching kids how to DJ through sponsored programmes, participation in Love Music Hate Racism.

A vote for me is accepting versatility with a bit of fun, so let’s all embrace change.

My name is Gregory Bondaruk. I am in my 3rd year of studying International Business and Management at the School of Management. I believe that having experienced the University of Bradford over the past 2 years has allowed me to become a judge of it’s performance. By starting for the position of Course Representative and for a seat on the Union Council it is my goal to focus on the negatives aspects of Bradford and try and improve them for future students, so that they may have a fruitful time here.

Timothy Oladeru

My name is Timmy. A second year student of Medical Engineering. I love what is right, stands for what is right and will always fight for what is right. Chibundo Onwuamaegbu

My name is Chibundo Onwuamaegbu (a.k.a. Chi Chi) a third year Pharmacy student. I’m presently a part of the leadership team for a student group called ESICC here at the University.

I am indeed student orientated and want to be part of the Union Council. There is a need for improved Christian representation in University matters especially in employing and promoting positive decisions that ultimately benefits every student on campus.

We all want a positive change here in the university. Changes that celebrate our vast diversity, boosts equal rights, fairness in all decision and appropriate fees for student’s especially for the international students. Anna Stanczyk

Third year student of Politics and Peace Studies that strongly believes in personal engagement as well as the importance of the voice of the individual student.
I am interested in the politics of narcotic drugs and political marketing.

During my two years in the University I met loads of bureaucratic, unnecessary hurdles that made life of every student complicated.
That is why I am running for the Student Council.
I cannot promise to succeed in every aspect but I can guarantee that I will fight for your causes and try my best to make your voice heard.

Hello. I am Ian Thursfield. I am studying Foundation in Engineering, after doing a Law degree here aswell.

I am running to make a difference for you. I want to promote union policy to make everything safer for you. I want to be able to argue your more ETHICAL issues from the environment to the union goods. I SUPPORT fairtrade, better student funding and equality for all. I will be open to issues from you, the students, no matter how big or small.
